Notes

Made-to-Order (MTO) Program Terms

Our Made-to-Order program allows you to create a piece that is uniquely yours.

Each item is handcrafted by skilled artisans in Guatemala and produced specifically for you. Because every bag is made by hand, subtle variations in color, texture, and finish are a natural part of the process and reflect the character of artisan craftsmanship.

All Made-to-Order items are final sale and are not eligible for returns, exchanges, transfers, or remakes.

To ensure your piece meets expectations, photos of the completed item will be shared for customer review prior to shipment. Nena reserves the right to use these images for both approval purposes and brand marketing.

Please note that colors may appear differently in person than they do online due to screen settings and lighting variations. While we strive to display product colors as accurately as possible online, we cannot guarantee exact color representation when the product is viewed in person.

The textile for your MTO design is not included and must be purchased separately.

If pattern adjustments or structural modifications are required to fulfill your design, a minimum $150 pattern fee will apply. Customers will always be notified in advance if pattern changes are necessary. Any additional requests or changes beyond those specified will be billed at a starting fee of $200 + an hourly rate of $50.

Once an order has been submitted and approved, requested updates will incur a minimum $40 order change fee and may extend the production timeline.

Estimated production time is 12–16 weeks, though timelines may vary depending on order complexity and artisan production schedules.

By placing a Made-to-Order request, you acknowledge and agree to these terms.

Care Instructions

LEATHER & FABRIC CARE

We make every effort to provide our customers with the best-handcrafted and high-quality bags. Please note that all our processes to make the bags are done by hand, from curing, cutting, and treating the leather to using up-cycled huipils. Our bags have natural characteristics and qualities that should not be considered as flaws or as damage because they do not interfere with the functionality of the bag. We up-cycle vintage Maya clothing to make beautiful one-of-a-kind products. Many times you will find snags in the pattern. This is normal. Should your patterned huipil snag you can snip the loose threads with scissors. Do not pull them.
Some people also like to use Scotchgard Brand Protector on the fabric portion of their bag.
Should you choose to, you may use a leather conditioner but many of our customers prefer to let the natural oils of their skin wear on the leather to get that buttery soft feel to them, we advise doing a test spot on the leather before applying a conditioner or treatment to the entire bag. You can read our tutorial on how to use the leather care treatment if you choose to go this route.

NENA & CO. REPAIRS POLICY

After 60 days from the time you've received your bag, Nena & Co. will no longer assume responsibility for repairs of your product. However, we are more than happy to assist with recommendations on where you can have your bag repaired. We use our local shoe cobbler or specialty bag shops for any repairs or customization we have done to Nena bags.
Nena & Co. is not responsible for damages that may occur during care for merchandise; including but not limited to conditioning washing, drying and/or dry cleaning.

Sourcing & Materials

Sustainable sourcing

We are dedicated to preserving culture and reducing waste by giving a second life to beautiful, handwoven vintage textiles like huipiles and cortes. By repurposing these masterfully crafted, traditional Mayan garments into modern, functional pieces, we honor the history woven into every thread while keeping textile waste out of landfills.

Ethical labor

Our pieces are born from partnerships, not factories. Founded by Ali Hynek, Nena & Co. works directly with independent master weavers and artisans in Guatemala and beyond. We are deeply committed to providing honorable, sustainable income, flexible working environments, and fair wages that empower our artisans to support their families and keep their ancestral crafts alive.

Transparent values

We believe that fashion should be slow, intentional, and deeply respectful of the people who make it. Every Nena & Co. product carries a story of heritage, dedication, and artistry. We strive for complete transparency in our process, ensuring that when you carry one of our bags, you know exactly whose hands crafted it and the profound cultural legacy you are helping to support.
